Project Details

The Government of Tamil Nadu have announced that the Coimbatore Central Prison would be shifted from its current location and a Semmozhi Poonga with an indoor and outdoor auditoriums and other facilities to be developed in two phases. The location selected for Semmozhi Poonga has an area of about 165 acres within the Coimbatore Central Prison campus. In the first phase 45 acres to be developed and the balance 120 acres to be developed after Prison campus is shifted. The proposed Botanical Garden to be World Class with state-of-the-art infrastructure, primarily for conservation of rare, threatened and endangered plants. The Botanical Garden would serve as a focal point not only for conservation but also for environmental education, research, recreation, environmental governance and management. It would also have an International Convention Center with green building concept designed for capacity of 1000 persons with flexibility of converting them into multi halls with lesser capacities.

Accordingly, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Developing Semmozhi Poonga was prepared by the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) through Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL). The Government of Tamil Nadu have accorded Administrative Sanction for Developing Semmozhi Poonga in Coimbatore in the vacant land in Coimbatore Prison campus as Phase I at a cost of Rs.167.25 crore.

This project is entrusted with Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) for the implementation of works in 4 packages viz., Garden and associated works, Convention Centre, Surface Parking and Pipeline from Ukkadam Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to Semmozhi Poonga. Foundation stone was laid on 18.12.2023 and all envisaged work components viz., Botanical Garden, Convention Centre and Pipeline work are nearing completion.
